About
Jim van der Steege (b. 1997) is a composer based in The Hague. His work pushes the boundaries of the contemporary concert experience. Alongside his instrumental ensemble works, his multimedia compositions weave together connections between text, speech, sound synthesis, sampling and field recordings. His affinities with electronic music genres such as drum & bass and ambient music are audible in the sophistication of his electronic sounds. He holds his material to a rigorous, coherent logic, searching for the beauty of abstract relations.
He is currently developing a theory of multimedia counterpoint as part of his masters degree at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, where he studied with Peter Adriaansz, Yannis Kyriakides and Martijn Padding.
He has written for the Residentie Orkest and the Quatuor Bozzini, among others, and was recently commissioned by November Music to write one of his Contraludes for Tom Sanderman: An ongoing series of solo electroacoustic works for varying solo instruments, in which the juxtaposition of existing music and new music is central.
